Who Is Satan?
“The devil has sinned from the beginning” 1 John 3:8 "That serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan" Revelation 12:9 The word ‘Satan’ means adversary or opposer. The original Hebrew term, satan, is a noun from a verb meaning primarily to, “obstruct and oppose,” as it is found in Numbers 22:22, 1 Samuel 29:4, Psalms 109:6. The most common English synonym for "Satan" is "Devil", which descends from Middle English devel, that in turn represents an early Germanic borrowing of Latin diabolus (also the source of "diabolical"). This in turn was borrowed from Greek diabolos "slanderer", from diaballein "to slander. In the New Testament, "Satan" occurs more than 30 times in passages alongside Diabolos (Greek for "the devil"), referring to the same person as this Satan. The Bible speaks of this Satan or Devil that was once a perfect being who dwelt in heaven and was called Lucifer. How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my thrown above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." Isaiah 14:12-15. Jesus said, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." Luke 10:18. "Thou wast upon the holy mountain of God." Ezekiel 28:14. Note - Lucifer is also symbolized by the king of Babylon in Isaiah 14 and as the king of Tyrus in Ezekiel 28. Did God Create Satan? No. God created Lucifer who was perfect with the free will to choose. Lucifer became Satan by his own choice. Lucifer was one of those highly exalted angels until pride, jealousy, discontent and self-exaltation arose in his life. God made a perfect angel who, of his own free will, chose to be a devil. The Lord could have made all of His creatures like robots, but a robot cannot love. True love must be willing to take risks. This is why parents decide to have children, knowing that at some time they may choose to disobey. “You were created... You were the anointed cherub who covers... You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty... You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you" - Ezekiel 28:12-15
How do we know Lucifer lived in Heaven?
The Bible says Lucifer was created by God, as were all other angels (Ephesians 3:9). Lucifer was a "covering" cherub, or angel. One great angel stands on the left side of God's throne and another on the right (Psalms 99:1). "Thou wast created." Ezekiel 28:13, 15. "Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth." Ezekiel 28:14. "Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty ... every precious stone was thy covering ... the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. ... Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." Ezekiel 28:12-15. Lucifer was one of those highly exalted angel leaders. Lucifer's beauty was flawless and breathtaking. His wisdom was perfect. His brightness was awe-inspiring. Ezekiel 28:13 seems to indicate that his throat was specially prepared to make him an outstanding musician. Some think he led the angelic choir. Why did God Allow Lucifer to Sin?
God allowed Lucifer to carry out his rebellion for several reasons. First, to forever settle any question of whether or not God makes His creatures with freedom of choice. Second, if God had destroyed Lucifer as soon as he began spreading doubts about God's love and government, the other intelligent creatures would have forever had lingering questions They might have thought, "Perhaps Lucifer was right." Therefore, Lucifer was allowed to demonstrate the horrible results of sin. Finally, God does not want His creatures to obey Him merely because He will punish them if they don't. He wants us to obey from principles of love rather than from fear. With whom did sin originate?
"The devil sinneth from the beginning." 1 John 3:8. "That old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan." Revelation 12:9. Satan, also called the devil, is the originator of sin. Without the Scriptures, the origin of evil would remain unexplained. Who Is The Devil?
