The Sabbath Day

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work...” Exodus 20:8-10 (KJV).

The topic of the Sabbath Day is of great importance merely for the fact that it is more relevant today than ever before. Many predictions made by the Bible mention freedom of religion disappearing in the modern world following an economic collapse.

What Is The Sabbath Day?

The Sabbath Day is Saturday the 7th day of the week. The word “Sabbath” means “Rest” and the Bible commands us to “cease from work on the seventh-day”. The Sabbath is primarily designed for the spiritual benefit of humans. The creator set it apart for a holy use. It’s designed for religious activity. God rested on the seventh-day, blessed it, and sanctified it or set it apart for a holy use.

Is The Sabbath Day Saturday Or Sunday?

Lets see what scriptures the Bible contains that identify the Sabbath day

  • The seventh-day is the SABBATH OF THE LORD - Exodus 20:10
  • Jesus is LORD OF THE SABBATH DAY - Mark 2:28
  • The SABBATH is "THE LORD'S HOLY DAY" - Isaiah 58:13
  • God blessed, rested on, and made holy the SEVENTH-DAY SABBATH. Saturday is the true Lord's Day - Genesis 2:1-3
  • Christ, the Lord, kept the SABBATH - Luke 4:16
  • Paul and the apostles kept the SABBATH, and Gentiles did too - Acts 13:14, 42,44
  • God calls men and women to keep their feet from breaking the SABBATH - Isaiah 58:13
  • God wants His people in the last days to obey His commandments and remain faithful to Jesus - Revelation 14:12

Why Do So Many Worship On Sunday?

No matter how popular something is does not make it correct or biblical. Matthew 7:13 (NIV) “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”

The majority of ‘Christians’ today have accepted Sunday worship as the Lords day rather than the biblical seventh day Sabbath.“Protestants…accept Sunday rather than Saturday as the day for public worship after the Catholic Church made the change… But the Protestant mind does not seem to realize that… in observing the Sunday, they are accepting the authority of the spokesman for the church, the Pope.” Our Sunday Visitor, Feb 5, 1950.

A Christian is to live a life in accordance to the way Jesus Christ lived. So obvious to ask the question “What day did Jesus go to church?” Luke 4:16 tells us “He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom.” Even in his death Jesus kept the Sabbath, he died on the Friday, rested in the grave on Sabbath and rose Sunday morning.

“If Protestants would follow the Bible, they should worship God on the Sabbath Day. In keeping the Sunday that are following a law of the Catholic Church.” Albert Smith, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. February 10,1920.

Who Changed The Sabbath?

The Biblical Sabbath which God blessed and sanctified (Genesis 2:2,3) was set aside. In its stead the festival observed by the heathen as “the venerable day of the sun” was exalted. That the attention of the people might be called to the “Sun” day, it was made a festival in honor of the resurrection of Christ.

It is a fact generally admitted by Protestants, that the scriptures give no authority for the change of the Sabbath. Catholic teachers acknowledge that the change of the Sabbath was made by their church, and declare that Protestants, by observing Sunday , are recognizing Romes authority.

“We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.” Peter Geiermann, CSSR, A Doctrinal Catechism, 1957 edition, page 50.

Are There Bible Passages Supporting Sunday Worship?

“It is well to remind the Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists and all other Christians, that the Bible does not support them anywhere in their observance of Sunday. Sunday is an institution of the Roman Catholic Church, and those who observe the day observe a commandment of the Catholic Church.” Priest Brady, in an address, reported in the Elizabeth, N.J. “News”, March 18,1903.

“Prove to me from the Bible alone that I am bound to keep Sunday holy. There is no such law in the Bible. It is a law of the holy Catholic Church alone. The Bible says ‘Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.’ The Catholic Church says, No. By my divine power I abolish the Sabbath day and command you to keep holy the first day of the week. And lo! The entire civilized world bows down in reverent obedience to the command of the Holy Catholic Church.” Thomas Enright, CSSR, President, Redemptorist College (Roman Catholic), Kansas City, MO, Feb. 18, 1884.

Hasn't The Sabbath Been Done Away With?

The argument that Christ changed the Sabbath commandment is disproved by his own words. In his sermon on the mount he said: Mathew 5:17-19

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till Heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Mathew 5:17-19

God the father wrote the commandments so why would he come to abolish them. And by living his life in accordance with this law he came to fullfil the law not to abolish it! It’s a strange coincidence that the commandment many Christians have trouble with accepting is the Sabbath commandment, they are happy to accept thou shalt not kill, tho shalt not commit adultery but its important to note that the one commandment they forget is the only one that starts with the word “Remember...”

God created the Sabbath in Eden, commanded it on Mount Sinai, kept it in His life, clarified it in His death. Everyone will be keeping the Sabbath in the new Heaven and the new earth. If all of these people in Godʼs history are committing to keeping the Sabbath, what would keep you from keeping it.

The Seventh Day Sabbath

    The Seventh Day Sabbath

  • The Bible teaches that all Ten Commandments are just as binding in the New Testiment as they were in the Old Testiment. James 2:10-11
  • Jesus also spoke around 31AD about Jerusalem being destroyed in 70AD, and for the 39 years in between He told His disciples to pray that their flight would not be in winter or on the Sabbath. Jesus expected that after His death the winter would continue, so He was expecting that the Sabbath would continue after His death.Mathew 24:20 (KJV)
  • The last book of the Bible speaks of a time of great tribulation and clearly states that there will be people continuing to keep the 10 commandments of God and claiming the faith of Jesus Christ. These are true Bible Christians who keep ALL of the 10 commandments Revelation 14:12

Should We Keep The Sabbath Today?

The Biblical Sabbath is mentioned throughout the Bible, from the creation story in Genesis right through to the book of Revelation. It’s interesting to note that the major people mentioned throughout the Bible all kept this day called “the Sabbath-day”, from Adam to John the Revelator and even Christ himself, all the apostles, even the Greek gentiles went to church on Saturday.

If we choose to be a Christian we should follow the example Christ himself set and believe in the Bible and the Bible only and not the added traditions of other organizations or religious denominations. If you read the New Testament apostles account of the life of Jesus we note that it was not the sinners or non-believers that caused him the most trouble it was the religious institutions of the day (Pharisees and Sadducees). They compounded the doctrines of the Bible with traditions and ceremonies not found in the scriptures.
